History and Religion – Two Great Reasons
to Travel to Germany
Unlike the United States, Germany is not a “new”
country, relatively-speaking.
|
|
As a result, traditions, buildings, and
towns are steeped in centuries of German history. Hence, many
people travel there from around the globe just to visit some
of the most culturally significant, moving sights in the world.
Topping the list of religious places to which many tourists
flock is the stunning cathedral at Aachen. |
|
|
Long regarded as one of the most amazing medieval examples of
architecture, Aachen Cathedral dates to the time of Charlemagne,
who commissioned its building. Even if you’re not of the
Christian or Jewish faiths, you can’t help but be stirred
by this towering, legendary symbol of a society long since past.
Many people enjoy traveling to Lorsch, where the Abbey and Altenmunster
are definite destination “hot spots”. Again, this
spectacular representation of Carolingian architecture and artwork
has been preserved and will no doubt move you, regardless of
your background.
The Cologne Cathedral, which took over six hundred years to
finish, is also a remarkable structure. Though it’s only
made of stone and glass, you’ll swear that it’s
alive and organic, as it pays homage to the heavens with its
soaring Gothic construction.
Want to learn more about Martin Luther? Why not visit Eisleben
and Wittenberg where you can walk in the footsteps of the man
who started the Reformation.
Finally, if you want a different kind of historical and religious
experience, why not travel to the island of Reichenau? There,
a Benedictine monastery (circa 8th century Europe) is sure to
be the subject of hundreds of photos and dozens of memories.
