German Cities - Bonn

Bonn – The Delectable “Bon-Bon” of Germany! The question isn’t so much what will you do while in Bonn, Germany; it’s better asked what won’t you do, because there’s just so much available in this city that’s over 2000 years old!

Best known as the birthplace of Beethoven, Bonn offers much more than music, though that’s certainly a selling point. Set along the Rhine, there are plenty of opportunities for you to enjoy a beautiful view (or tour) of this historic body of water which has so richly influenced the history of Bonn and its surrounding communities. (After all, water is a source of both life and industrial success; without it, Bonn might never have reached the popularity it still enjoys.) For instance, nature lovers will enjoy a walk through the Rheinaue, a park located on the banks of the Rhine river. You can also bask in the loveliness of the Botanischer Garten (or botanical garden) in Bonn.

And, of course, there is the University of Bonn, which means one thing – a thriving nightlife! Here, the city won’t sleep when it turns dark; in fact, there’s much to do on the town, such as attending jazz clubs or discos until the wee hours of the morning. With over 500 pubs and 30,000 students, you can’t help but be transfixed by the energy!

In Bonn, you’ll find that some of the architecture hearkens back to the days when the Romans invaded the country. In fact, a Latin phrase is still used to describe this amazing country: “Bonna solum felix” (“Bonn, you fortunate soil”), which exemplifies how much of a stronghold the Romans had. Thus, the construction and art is an amalgamation of several cultures over a period of two millennia. Bring your camera, lest you miss capturing any of the memories you’re sure to have in this enchanting land!

There are currently over 312,000 persons living in Bonn, making it a good-sized town, though by no means the largest city in Europe; however, it is in the top 20 largest in Germany. Thus, the visitor can enjoy many activities, but will never feel truly overwhelmed by the scope of the town.

Bonn is divided into districts, including Bad Godesberg, Beuel, Bonn, and Hardtberg. Yes, this might seem confusing, but it’s really no different than the set-up of New York City, which is divided into various boroughs.

Once you get used to the concept, it’s easy to travel throughout this
gorgeous land.

One of the most famous parts of Bonn is the so-called “Museum Mile.” Along this stretch, you can visit the Kunstmuseum Bonn, filled with modern art; the Kunst und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland; the Haus der Geschichete der Bundesrepublik Deutchland, where you’ll find everything you’ve wanted to know about the history of the Federal Republic of Germany; the Beethoven House; the Agyptisches Museum, which focuses on Egyptian art; and the Rheinishces Landesmuseum Bonn.

Bonn is home to one of the most well-known cemeteries, the Old Cemetery Bonn, where visitors and locals often enjoy visiting. There, you’ll be able to see centuries of tombs and evidence of generations past. If you’re “into” castles, the Godesburg fortress stands in ruins in Bonn.

Though the structure has crumbled over 100s of years, you’ll still be impressed by the strength of this medieval reminder. However, Bonn isn’t all ancient history. This town thrives with a busy modern district, complete with headquarters for such globally recognized companies as T-Mobile and Schurmann-Bau. It is in this area of the city that the Maritim Bonn is also located, a five-star hotel known for its attention to detail.

Should you wish to visit a more religious site, why not try the Doppelkirche Schwarzheindorf? This amazing “double church” hearkens from the 12th century and is sure to take your breath away, no matter what your religious background. As far as sacred spaces go, this is a “must see.” Regardless of your personal “bent”, you’ll find something to fit your palate (both figuratively and literally) when you take a trip to Bonn.
